For those that don’t know that #truckerslife ...These are Tire Thumpers and are used to check if a tire needs closer inspection during routine stops. Commercial vehicles average 18 tires per Tractor/Trailer unit with tire pressures averaging over 100psi per tire. That higher air pressure allows the use of a resonance tool to audibly check tire pressure. During a routine walk around, the Driver simply bounces the weighted end of the thumper against the tire and listens for the sound the impact makes. A dull thud means the tire is losing air pressure or in need of repair, and a sharp “boing” sound like a dribbled basketball - means the tire has
a safe air pressure level.
